DTS monitoring report – Ecosan Projects.by Moses Wakala submitted on 15-09-2010

NAME OF SITE VISITED - RAMBA BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

Date of Visit - 28TH AUG 2010 Previous Visit - June 2010
Date completed- Feb 2010 Date it was put in use - May 2010
Status - Working well

StatusRamba Boys High school with a population of 938 Boys is a Provincial Boarding school which was selected by EPP as a pilot site for decentralized treatment plant among other sites. The DTS plant was awarded to BINLAW Construction Company who did their best it being their first job of that kind. The EPP team worked hard to ensure that the construction was according to standards and as per the pilot plans. The main works of the contractor included:

Ø Construction of 90 cubic meter biogas Digester.
Ø Construction of a six chamber Anaerobic Baffled Reactor.
Ø Rehabilitation of existing pit latrine to flushable toilet.
Ø Connection of the treated effluent to the farm

The school was previously poorly equipped with sanitation facilities in the compound and the 16 toilets were few and smelly making life so uncomfortable for students. EcoSan Promotion Documentary on Television in Kenya depicted some boys removing shirts and pullovers before visiting these latrines so as not to come out smelling to their class-rooms.

Picture showing the status of the pit Latrines in Ramba School before EPP intervention.

The latrines walls were made of rusty iron-sheets that were coming off. With EPP funding, eight toilets were rehabilitated to permanent flushable units with tiled floor. The school also did rehabilitation of the other eight latrines to equal standard with rain water harvesting. Currently, water tank has been constructed next to the urinal and water from this tank is used to flush the toilets with pour-flush method.

From the visit, one could notice the relief and comfort from the students as they visited the new facility to relieve themselves. The Bio-digester is working well and already a gas is being produced which burned when tested by the consultant. The Baffle Reactor is ok and the farm has been prepared ready for the treated effluent.

KitchenThe burners and kitchen piping has not been done. The consultant has delivered the burners in school and is organizing with the school management on the kitchen piping and fittings.

Toilets
The toilets have been fitted with the gutters for rain water harvesting and the collected water is used in flushing the toilet. The two urinals are also connected to the Digester.

Picture of the eight Rehabilitated pit latrine to flushable toilet in Ramba School.

Digester
This picture below shows the Sealed Neck of the Digester. The top cover is just beside it which needs to be put on top of the neck. Wedging to prevent excess gas pressure from pushing the lid has not been done. This is urgent too. One of the plugs in the test unit manhole adjacent to the Neck is also missing. The school has fenced all the DTS plant to keep off people from unnecessary entry. The consultant is planning for a training of the teachers and students on operation and maintenance. The school need to get one grounds-man to be trained to operate the system.

Masonry tank-This picture below also shows a water holding masonry tank constructed by the school to store water for flushing the toilet. Operation instructions can be seen pinned on the wall. The system is operating well with plastic jerricans used to scope the water (about 2.5 Litres per flush). Treated effluent has not overflowed to the garden. There is a small holding tank about 30 cubic meters dug at the end of the baffle reactor before it flows to the farm.

NAME OF SITE VISITED - ST FRANCIS LWAK GIRLS SCHOOL

Date of Visit - 28TH AUG 2010 Previous Visit - June 2010
Date completed- Feb 2010 Date it was put in use - May 2010 Status: working well

Lwak Girls is a Boarding school with a population of over a thousand girls. The school was chosen as a pilot site of ecosan technology due to an interest in biogas to reduce the firewood cost in school apart from achieving better sanitation. Therefore the school is very much interested in seeing the biogas produced and used in kitchen. The school has many toilets well constructed with flushing systems. Fifty toilets have been connected to the DTS constructed by COMILA Construction Company which was awarded the contract to build a 90 cubic meter Digester and A baffle reactor. The general water consumption in the school is estimated to be about 60 cubic meters per day. Flushing, washing and bathing water that is connected to the digester is about 60% of the total water. During the previous visits, there was a notable smell from the baffle reactor which from inspection was coming from the semi-treated waste from digester being pushed by the excess water inflow. By inspection, some girls were bathing from outside at night and storm water was by mistake channelled to the DTS. All these excess water connections were re-directed to a soak away pit and the foul smell has now ceased. The facility is well in use and waste is full in the digester and Baffle Reactor.

Digester
There was no gas produced from the digester from first inspection. This was as a result of a leakage at the clay seal which had not been attended to from previous visit. In this visit, training was done to the school plumper on sealing and maintaining the DTS components. Kitchen piping components were bought by the school and kitchen piping instruction given to the plumper with two burners to be fitted. The burners were delivered by the consultant to the school. A leakage in the pipe that was detected is to be rectified as piping is in process. The school wishes to have the gas also used in the bakery and requires more information on this.

This Digester neck was found leaking as a result of the clay dried and cracked. Normally, it is kept wet under water to reduce chances of cranking. All the gas had escaped through the neck and there no gas could reach the kitchen. The wedges were removed and the lid pulled aside so as to repair the leakage.

All the dried clay was removed and a better quality prepared clay put well with the plumper so as to understand the procedure of sealing the digester.

Pressing the lid tightly.

Sealing with clay.

Putting water cover on clay.

Summary.
The DTS plant is doing well in operation. The school has dug a big fish pond in the garden waiting for treated effluent. So far no water has begun flowing in the pond because the school had closed.

Site follow-up and awareness creation on ecosan toilets/biogas in Bondo,Siaya,Kisumu and Rachuonyo districts by Wycliffe Osumba.Submited on 30-08-2010

· Follow-ups were carried out as planned for the few sites where the UDDTs and DTSs (Decentralised Waste Water Systems) were constructed.
· In most areas visited, some of the UDDTs were in use and some were still under construction.

Current status
· Ramba Secondary School - the pour flush toilets were completed and all the toilet doors were in use, biogas piping was already in place but they have not yet installed the biogas stove.
· Bwaja Community Self Help Group - the UDDTs were poorly completed but they are in use. The maintenance and usage was poor.
· At Omiya village near Kokise Primary School, awareness was created and they are demanding the UDDTs. The population reached was 84 people.
· At Raliew Secondary School, the biogas and toilet construction was not completed. The floor tilling was not completed, fixing of the flushing tanks was not done, finishing on the doors was poor.
· Kaminogedo Primary School, construction was complete, but outer finishing was not done. They are not yet in use.

Problems identifiesd or realized during the follow-ups· Some groups were not followed up due to financial problems to help facilitate the transport.
· Most of the places visited still need some more training on behavior change.
· Usage of the end product, maintenance and why Ecosan
· More community demand for the groups that have learnt about Ecosan toilet

Solutions to the above problems· Terms and conditions for payment need to be looked into to avoid delay and to ease the work before us.
· For future implementation of Ecosan, the following areas need to be done to avoid many problems:
a. Proper community mobilization and community need to demand the project and show commitment to own the project.
b. Proper training on the maintenance and usage of the end products.
c. Construction should be the last approach, after the groups have already shown the commitment by mobilizing the locally available resources and the officer on the ground has verified them.
d. Time frame for the implementation need to be looked upon because it is difficult to evaluate and monitor this kind of project due to short time frame.
e. The contractors need to be trained on the Ecosan concept before being given the work. Many Ecosan have been constructed and where the above problems were not addressed, there are still problems.

Report by Wycliffe Osumba, submitted on 2010-06-29.

Aim
The aim of the project is to improve the people’s health situations through the dissemination of hygienic environmentally friendly sanitation technologies. Special attention is given to the reduction in water consumption, the aspect of recycling degradable waste from biomass as fertilizers to improve hygiene and health through clean toilets on institution and household level.

This month we had different follow - ups made as per the planned activities as follows:
1. Achievements
2. Problems
3. Way forward
4. Plan of action

Achievements
This month we had conducted the following training for communities, groups and institutions. The training was focusing the following areas:
1. Maintenance of the UDDTS
2. Destruction of the end products
3. Wages of the end products from UDDTS
4. Composting procedures

Club formation in schools I visited was formed and has the eco-san team, to support and sustain the project as one of the resources.

The schools had already realized the opportunities, strength, weaknesses, policies, mission, general objectives threats they have.

Mission
· Create and support the conservation of environment by fighting against the destruction of indigenous vegetation as a centre and focal point, the community and school work together.
· As a centre and focal point, the community and school work together.
· Sensitize pupils and community at large on the importance of conservation of the environment
· Transfer of knowledge to local community to promote Income Generation Activities (IGA)
· To amply the new technologies and knowledge acquired both as school and community

General objectives
The project is to provide sustainable development programme to the community through which cares and support the conservation of ecological sanitation and environmentally conservation.

Policies
· To increase income earning opportunities to both schools and communities.
· To conserve and sustain the environment.
· To transfer knowledge and new technology for developing efficient and sustainable education system.
· To provide required services to the pupils and the community on environmental, ecological, sanitation and agricultural education.

Strength

· Available of manpower
· Positive attitude of community members both pupils, teachers and communities
· Skilled staff on environmental conservation and ecological sanitation management.

Weakness
· Lack of modern technology and skills on biogas, usage of sunlight to produce power system
· Lack of sufficient information and enlightenment within the community
· Lack of resources to help in sustainability

Opportunities
· Availability of land (School garden)
· Availability of iron roof for water harvesting
· Skilled teachers to facilitate both pupils and communities

Threats
· Hostile and sometimes unpredictable climate
· Poor soil texture
· Tropical diseases and pest
· Destruction caused by animals and human being.
· Theft

Success indicators
· Community members and pupils have been sensitized in new methods and techniques of using eco-san product.
· Teachers and pupils have developed positive attitudes towards eco-san project.
· Community members are planting more trees to address the climate change.

Current activities
· Maize plantation are in place
· Planning to start horticultural garden in school.
· Eco-san team meetings.

Problems

· Lack of water for irrigation and hand washing because most schools do not have water supply system in place.
· Lack of stultified seeds for planting.
· Few eco san toilets constructed are not enough for both pupils and teachers; this makes work difficult to monitor who is to use the units.
· Communities are demanding eco san services in their homes because they have learnt the goodness of the units.

Community Activities

Most of the community groups are women groups with good structures in place.
1. Chair person
2. Secretary
3. Treasurer
4. Committee Members
5. Group Members

Most of the groups are legal groups, registered with the ministry of cultural and social services.
These groups have the project goals, problem statement, justification, objectives, activities and they meet monthly for reporting purposes.
Most of the groups visited are concerned with the environmental conservation after they had gone through training of different training for income generation activities.

Due to poor soil condition many pit latrines had been collapsing during the rainy season. And affected many called permanent toilets collapsed.

Problems

The community does have the following problems during the visit meeting
Most of the communities visited ecological sanitation is still a big problem that means lack of the following in place:
· Dish racks
· Composting pit
· Rubbish pit
· Bathroom
· Water tanks for roof catchment
Due to the above, most of women and girl child walk a long distance to fetch water from rivers; lakes which take some people 20KM both from river to home. This water is polluted because all the laundry and bathing are still practiced along the water sources.

Achievements

1. Most of the places I visited had already using the eco san unit.
2. Urine is in use for agricultural purposes.

Way forward

· Training the needy schools on tree nursery management.
· Horticultural farming.
· Community training on how to manage community groups.
· Follow ups of the unfinished construction.

Schools and house hold follow up in Homa bay,Rongo,Ndhiwa and Rachuonyo districts.UDDTs.by Wycliffe Osumba.Submitted on 07-17-2010

Site area
South Nyanza water service board post ecosan construction follow ups for Schools and house holds.
Rongo District
The follow up was conducted on the following schools;

Nyarach primary school
In the above school, the UDDTs constructed were in use, but later on it ceased due to poor usage, blockage of the urine pipe, ash was not available for usage, and the community were not involved during the training . All the UDDTs are in bad state, some doors are broken , urine bins are not in place, no water tank in place and termites had destroyed urine doors.

Wayforward
An agreement was made with the deputy teacher to organize with the community, a one day training session focused on , ownership, sustainability, philosophy of ecosan and maintenance of UDDTs toilet.

Nyarach Primary School UDDT in Rongo District. Not used properly. Urine door rotten due to rainfall.Nyarach primary School.
UDDT chamber in use but without application of ash.
Choked UDDT in a poor state due to wrong user procedures. Nyarach primary school.

Rongo Primary School
The above school had four doors of the UDDTs constructed for them, two doors for boys , one door for girls, and one door for the teachers. they started using them , but they stopped usage due to the following reasons;
  • Lack of proper training of parent, pupils and teachers on the ecosan concept.
  • Parents were not willing to have their children bring ash to school for use.
  • Monitoring to use ecosan toilets became a problem due to large ratio of pupils population to toilets in the school (1400 as against 3 doors).

Current Status

  • Urine pipes are blocked
  • They are poorly used
  • They used the units with out applying ash after usage
  • No hand washing in place
  • Termite invaded urine doors
  • And the units lack of proper care
UDDT chamber at Rongo Primary School. In a bad state due to bad maintenance and no use of ash after patronage.
Blocked UDDT squatting pan due to lack of maintenance. Rongo Primary School.

Broken Chamber door, due to Lack of maintenance at Rongo Primary School.

Holes prepared for tree planting at Rongo Primary School dug by the health club. fertiliser from UDDT to be applied.

Wayforward

Post construction training will be conducted for parents, teachers, and community members, on ownership, sustainability, the concept of ecosan toilets , as well as their roles and responsibility.

Ndhiwa District

The construction at ratanga mixed secondary school was completed and students were allowed to start using them by July, 2010 . The follow up will be conducted when school will be opened in September 2010.

Rachuonyo District-The follow ups were conducted for both school and the community.

Kendu muslim mixed secondary school

All the UDDTs are in use, the boys side is in good condition. however, that of the teachers and girls are in bad state. For the teachers, the urine containers are not well maintained, for the girls, they donot use ash anytime they visit the unit.
The health club was formed and they play a good role on the side of the boys.
The school garden has been made, they have planted maize as a top dressing.
The UDDT technology has been accepted because of the practical benefits realised. Almost All the pit latrines collapse during the raining season.

Wayforward

They need update training, which will be conducted when school reopens in September 2010.
Demonstration farms are in place and in the next term they will start using urine for top dressing their crops.

Sunken pit latrine site. This came about due to the poor soil quality.

A well maintained urine chamber at Kendu Muslim Sec.School.

Households - North kamenya self help project group

They had 16 constructed UDDTs and all are working , they started using the units in 2009 and one chamber is almost full , they used urine during the planting season for top dressing and the result was good compared to the harvesting done in 2008.

Application for urine was applied to the following:

  • Mango trees planted, tree nursery, bananas, and cereals
  • Rationing of urine are 1 to 3 for trees and for cereals are 1 to 5
  • House hold with 10 urine of 20 litres takes one week to filled up
Problems
  • Hand washing tanks has not been installed due to insecurity
  • Urine pipes are normally blocked and to rod it is not easy
  • Termites have infested some of the urine doors
  • Backdoors wooden frame has been beaten by rain and is causing it to rot.
Solutions
  • Urine pipes need to be replaced by wash pipes for easy management.
  • Hand washing needs to be replaced by Ferro cement water tank, for it to be permanent
  • Background needs to be made to metallic frame and plate of 18 gauge.

Activities of sustainability groups

  1. Started four tree nurseries
  2. Micro saving and credit

Tree planting such as

  1. Mango planting 2010 200
  2. Orange planted 2010 300
  3. Pawpaw planted 2010 300
  4. Banana planted 2010 250

Community demand of UDDTs

During the rainy season, which was from the start of April-July 2010, most pit latrines collapsed while the Ecosan UDDTs were the only toilets that remained.
Due to the uniqueness of Ecosan toilets, communities are now demanding more. They are ready with the locally available materials such as sand, ballast, round poles, hard covers, water unskilled labour, marram.

Community meeting

We had two different group meetings for which I was invited to facilitate them on Ecosan. The attendance was good.
Seka Kamser sub/location population 86 people
Obama health and community development programme population reached was 200 people, that were demanding technology

Topics covered
  1. Philosophy of Ecosan
  2. Types of ecosan toilets
  3. Benefits, usage, maintenance, bill of quantity

Homa bay district

The following was carried out to Ndiru primary school and all the units constructed are in use. They started using them in May 2010.

The health clubs are maintaining them well and they had started planting trees in school. They are going to start working in school gardens when the school will be open.
The community members were already being trained on the UDDTs and they welcomed the technology and demanding more Ecosan to be constructed in their home so that pupil learn to be constructed in their home s that pupil learn on how to use them both in school and home.

Planned activities for two weeks
Schools follow ups Radienya primary school
Development of training manual –office
Typing the written manual –Oyugis
Community meeting –Oriang’ Maumi Nyochoo Women group

· Sustainability of the project

General comment: The community was happy with the new technology introduced to the school. They demanded that the units be extended to the communities around.

Observation
· Health clubs activity involved maintaining the units in a good status.
· They had school gardens, and cultivated cowpeas.
· Radienya has become a place where people go and see how the UDDTs are being used.
· The population at the time the training was conducted is 80 people.

Problems
· The school used to have problems of collapsing pit latrine and even in the year 2010, their pits collapsed, but eco-san remained.
· The population of pupils exceeds the capacity of the constructed units.

Way Forward
· We agreed that they will sustain those constructed units and do any repair required.
· Their pupils will come with the ash needed for the unit.

They had prepared the garden and they are waiting to start using urine as their first harvesting, whilst they still wait for faeces to be ready.
